The Green Gallery and Misako & Rosen are co-presenting Trevor Shimizu at Tokyo Gendai. This exhibition showcases an artist who has contributed to both of our histories. We are thrilled to be showcasing Trevor’s work amidst the current global success of his painting practice. Featured at Tokyo Gendai will be a suite of four new paintings that are representative of current tendencies within his studio.
In Shimizu’s latest work, a sense of atmosphere prevails. Occurring via soft undulations of colors and density of mark; the paintings teeter on a kind of abstraction that snaps together, forming a clear picture of landscape. Impressionist and romantic undertones are posited by way of Shimizu’s cool-handed delivery. There is an earnest investment in the subject but through distance.
Shimizu’s landscape paintings are inviting in their ability to reflect the familiar. Lush surfaces, ambiguous representations of the natural, and a lightness of touch; these works posit a tongue-cheek play, capturing the outside world and flirting with ways it has been depicted in the past. These paintings draw you in with visual serenity but quickly point to their matter-of-factness. They nod to a complex history, yet allow for an openness of experience.
We look forward to greeting you at Tokyo Gendai, July 4 - 7. You can find our presentation in the Hana section, booth H06.
