Steve Katrosits earned his BFA (’66) and MFA (’68) from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and is an award-winning painter. He has shown regularly in the region with recent exhibitions at the State Theatre Arts Center and Volume One Gallery, and, in 2012, he was awarded the first annual Lifetime Achievement in Art in Eau Claire. He makes paintings based on architecture with particular attention being paid to Functionalism from the 1920s and 1930s. Over the decades Steve has traveled to the sites and buildings referenced in his paintings—Utrecht, Budapest, Vienna—and so his work acts as both document and painterly construct. In addition to his art practice, Steve is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where he taught from 1968 – 2007. At UWEC Steve formed the core of its contemporary art studies both through his courses in drawing, painting and art history (Art Since 1955), as well as his work on the gallery committee where he brought to the UWEC campus such artists as Roy Lichtenstein, Sue Coe, Tom Friedman, Sue Williams and Thomas Nozkowski to exhibit and lecture.
Steve Wetzel is an American artist who teaches in the Department of Film/Video/Animation/New Genres at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Much of Wetzel’s work focuses on social construction and the sacredness of events—their singularity in time and space. These themes can also be found in a book he penned in 2010 that was described by his editor as “an urgent and generous exegesis … [a] re-collecting of thoughts and experience, a naming of bullshit.” The second volume is forthcoming. Some recent group shows, performances and screenings include the Angstrom Gallery, and the LA Filmforum in Los Angeles, CA; the Hyde Park Arts Center, MDW Art Fair, and Rowley Kennerk Gallery in Chicago, IL; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Detroit, MI; CinemaSpace at the Segal Centre for Performing Arts, Montreal, Canada; and the Ann Arbor Film Festival where Steve won a Jury Award in 2010.
