The Green Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in NADA Villa Warsaw. We will be presenting a new suite of paintings from Milwaukee artist, Peter Barrickman. These offerings capture an accumulation of visual ideas worked out through their given materials. Each work follows its own idiosyncratic logic, playfully engaging with a set of variables that Barrickman introduces to the viewer. The artist thinks through the individuality of each painting, less so the grouping, in this presentation.
As in much of Barrickman’s work, drawing lies at its foundation. We witness this via what the artist chooses to reveal on the surface. An echo of an underdrawing, the residue of an early wash, or the calculated use of a glaze; these gestures tell us about the work’s making. Barrickman’s paintings are generous, even vulnerable, in this way; revealing their internality as well as that of the artist.
These recent works explore a kind of abstraction that still has footing in the concrete world. They derive themselves from the grid and the modular while also nodding to fire, foliage, water and natural abstractions. Barrickman considers these works “spring paintings,” and their light, generative nature posits a coming-into-being; a blossoming. The work gives the effect and affect of that which surrounds us this time of year; witnessing growth and structure at its beginnings, unsure of what may lie ahead.
