The Green Gallery and Misako & Rosen are thrilled to co-present Yui Yaegashi and Michelle Grabner at this year’s Barely Fair. Together this pairing forms the latest conversation in a dialog the galleries have engaged in over 15 years, spanning three continents. This economically-scaled offering accentuates the investment each artist has made thinking through the grid via pattern and textile.
Yaegashi’s quiet offerings are executed with the highest degree of formal consideration. The precision of mark and color are the result of a process involving controlled editing and succinct additive applications. The grid provides structure for investigation; at times clearly demarcated; other situations allow opportunity for such nuance, that this composition almost evaporates. We witness a kind of careful thinking taking place in these surfaces; discovering something comforting and rather human, in an otherwise rigid system.
Grabner’s discrete bronze work carries a weight and presence that extends the life of the cast textiles used in production. This source suggests a narrative and history that may not ever be seen; now hidden through this material transformation. The trace exposes wear and tear of regular use, accentuated by Grabner’s patinated application of bronze. The grid here offers something humble for the viewer; something commonplace. As in Yargashi’s work, we find ourselves anthropomorphizing this defining organizational structure of our lives.
