The work comprising 100 Patterns and 3 Heuristics reinforces Grabner’s perpetual interest in patterns of predictability and collective continuance within fields of wondrous difference. Introducing various pattern systems into individual paintings while not inducing rupture, instability, precariousness, or disequilibrium drives Grabner’s studio work. The questions Grabner’s painting poses are: “How much “difference” can be introduced into a pattern field without collapsing into unreliability? Will referential and familiar patterns tip the compositions into capriciousness and disintegration? What organizational conceits can be developed to unify disparity?”
The three bronze ‘heuristics’ are framing devices cast from the mulleins stalks that she grows in her rural Wisconsin garden. These wall sculptures redirect pattern and ornamentation toward the outer edge of empty fields, contouring a theoretical space for pattern discoveries and abstract invention.
